Floating and Sinking Eggs

Today we put an egg in water and it sunk.

We wondered how we could make the egg float in water.

Bailey: I think we could put it in a paper boat.
Rose: I think we could crack it because the stuff inside is lighter.
Keisha: I think we will have to crack the egg open because yolk floats on water
Oliver: I think we need to crack it open so it can float because shell doesn't float
Finn: I think if we tie a piece of paper to a piece of string and make a parachute.
Sophie Ag: I think we could make it light by cracking it.
Christina: I think we need to get less water because we have lots of water.
Liam: I think we might have to get a bigger bowl of water and then put the egg in the bowl.
Jayden: I think we need to make the egg little because it will float.
Bea: I think that we have to crack the egg because the egg will get lighter.
Zane: I think we have to take the inside out because the shell is lighter.
Jun: We need more water.
Greer: I think we will have to crack the egg because the stuff inside is lighter from the shell.

We experimented!!!!

We discovered:
  • If the egg is in a container or a boat it can float.

  • When we put it in a bigger bowl of water it still sunk.

  • The water pushed it down.

  • When we cracked the egg it sunk.

  • When we put the egg in plain water it sunk.

  • When we put the egg in salt water it floated.

  • When we put it in a container with salt water at the bottom and plain water at the top, the egg floated to the top of the salt water. So it floated in the middle of the glass.

I am a scientist so now:

Bea: I know that when we put an egg in plain water it will sink. If we put an egg in salt water it will float because salt water is heavier than plain water. The salt water in the ocean can lift an army boat, a regular boat and a ship because of the sea salt.

Zubia: I know when we put an egg in salt water it floats. When we put an egg in plain water it sunk because plain water is lighter than salt water.

Jayden: I know the egg will float in salt water because the egg did not float in plain water.

Jun: I know the egg will sink in the water.

Bailey: I know a boat can make an egg float on the water.

Sam: I know that the salt water lifts the egg up because the salt water is heavy and the egg might not float in a washing machine because a washing machine has got plain water.

Oliver: I know eggs float in salt water because it is heavier than the egg.  Just like a surf board because if salt is not in the water the surfboard will not float.

Avia:  I know we put plain water in the bowl and then salt water in the bowl and we put the egg in the cup and it floated.

Silke: I know when we put the egg it plain water it sinks because the egg is heavier.

Harrison: I know if you get a bowl and some water and put the water in and put an egg in it and the egg will sink.

Sophie Ad: I know that if you get a cup of water and put salt inside it and then put an egg in it the egg will float because salt water is heavier than the egg like the sea.

Liam: I know that if you put salt water in the bottom of a cup and plain water at the top the egg will go through the plain water and it will float when it gets to the salt water.

Rose: I know that now salt water and plain water floats like a ship. If you put the egg in plain water it sinks like when you put a shell in the water.

Te Paea: I know the egg sinks like a ship and like a boat.

Greer:I know that now we can do it at home if you don't have the ingredients then go to the supermarket.

Katie: I know that now it floats.

Keisha: I know when we put an egg in salt water it floats. When we put an egg in plain water it sinks because plain water is lighter than salt water.

Jack: I know the egg was heavier than the plain water and the salt water was heavier than the egg.

Zane: I know that an egg floats in salt water and if you put it in plain water it will sink. An egg floats in salt water because salt water is heavier than plain water. An egg can float like a can. It sinks in the plain water like a piece of paper.

Finn: I know that you need more string.

Sophie Ag: I know when we put eggs in salt water if floats. When we put it plain water it goes down to the bottom because an egg is heavier like an elephant.

Christina: I know the egg sinks in salt water and when we cracked it the yellow part came out and the yellow part is a little bit like a soccer ball and it was exciting when we cracked it.

Ashley: I know that the water it can lift up a plane.
